WEED CONTROL

Almost as soon as SRWG formed, we began working to help control weeds. Our volunteers participate in weed sprays and weed pulls each year hosted by SRWG and by our partners. If you have helped at a SRWG weed event over the years, be sure to scroll to the photo gallery at the bottom of this page.

In 2023, SRWG hosted the 25th Annual Weed Whacker Rodeo!

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers!

In 2023, SRWG’s Annual Weed Whacker Rodeo celebrated 25 years! To celebrate that history, SRWG gave out tokens of appreciation to long-time participants and supporters. And, thanks to a donation from Montana Valley Irrigation, we were able to give away a kayak - a true throwback to early years when Al procured a canoe to give away to one lucky volunteer. Thanks to FWP Bear Biologist Chad White for teaching volunteers how to use bear spray and be “bear aware” when volunteering in grizzly country. We would also like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success:

WEED WHACKER RODEO

The Weed Whacker Rodeo is SRWG’s longest standing volunteer event. The first year of the event, 1998, 500 volunteers showed up to pull knapweed, win prizes, and eat BBQ. Thousands of pounds of weeds have been pulled over the years - including 1482 lbs in 2004 - a Sun Canyon Record!

The Weed Whacker Rodeo is held the second Saturday in July each year. To participate, all you have to do is show up at 8:30 am. We provide the gloves, garbage bags, instructions, lunch and prizes!

If you’d like to join the SRWG newsletter or receive emails about the weed pull, fill out the form at the bottom of this page or email us.

OTHER WEED EVENTS

SRWG and our partners, including the USFW, Rocky Mountain Front Weed Roundtable, and county weed districts, work together to organize several weed sprays and weed pulls throughout the year. These events provide opportunities for volunteers to get outside, get their hands dirty, and help improve watershed health. We also work with local landowners to help with weed infestations on private lands.

Contact SRWG for more information on weed events or visit our EVENT page.
